Cadence to Speed Calculator — RPM to Road Speed
Convert your pedalling cadence to road speed for any gear combination.
How We Calculate This
Speed from Cadence Formula
Speed = Cadence x Gear Ratio x Wheel Circumference x 60 / 1,000,000
Where:
- Gear Ratio = Chainring teeth / Sprocket teeth
- Wheel Circumference is in millimetres
- Speed is in km/h
Each pedal revolution advances the rear wheel by gear ratio turns. The distance per wheel turn equals the wheel circumference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most efficient cadence is 80-100 RPM for road cycling. Recreational riders often pedal at 60-80 RPM. Professional riders typically sustain 90-100 RPM.
700x25c is approximately 2105 mm, 700x28c is about 2136 mm, 700x32c is about 2155 mm. Check your tyre for the ETRTO size and measure or look up the circumference.
Speed is directly proportional to cadence in any given gear. Doubling your cadence doubles your speed. However, higher cadences are harder to sustain.
Development is the distance the bike travels per pedal revolution. It is calculated as gear ratio multiplied by wheel circumference.
