Speed Calculator — Cycling Speed from Distance & Time
Calculate your average cycling speed from distance covered and time taken.
How We Calculate This
Speed Formula
Speed = Distance / Time
The calculator converts your time input into decimal hours, then divides your distance by this value to get speed in km/h. It also converts to mph (multiply km/h by 0.621371) and calculates pace in minutes per km and minutes per mile.
Pace Calculation
Pace is the inverse of speed: Pace (min/km) = Time (minutes) / Distance (km). This is useful for comparing effort across different ride lengths.
Frequently Asked Questions
For recreational cyclists, 20-25 km/h is typical. Club riders average 25-30 km/h, and competitive racers often exceed 35 km/h. Speed depends on terrain, wind, fitness and bike type.
Speed equals distance divided by time. For example, 50 km in 1 hour 45 minutes (1.75 hours) gives 50 / 1.75 = 28.6 km/h.
Yes, hilly routes significantly reduce average speed. A route with 1000m of climbing will typically be 3-5 km/h slower than a flat route of the same distance.
Average speed includes all stop time (traffic lights, breaks). Moving speed only counts time when you are actually pedalling. GPS computers typically show both.
