How We Calculate This
Weighted Average Speed
Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time
For each segment, time is calculated as distance / speed. The total distance is divided by the total time across all segments. This gives a distance-weighted harmonic mean, which correctly accounts for spending more time at slower speeds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Because you spend more time at slower speeds. If you ride 10 km at 20 km/h (30 min) and 10 km at 40 km/h (15 min), your average is 20 km / 0.75 hours = 26.7 km/h, not 30 km/h.
This calculator supports up to 3 segments. Set unused segments to 0 distance to exclude them.
If you want overall average speed including stops, add stop time to the segment. For moving average, only include time when pedalling.
