Not always at the entry level, but custom wheels let you choose exactly the hub, rim and spoke combination you want. Mid-range custom builds (£300-600 per pair) often outperform similarly priced factory wheels.

UK wheel builders typically charge £25-50 per wheel for labour. Some bike shops charge less if you buy components from them. Budget builders may charge £20, while specialist builders charge £50+.

32 spokes is the classic all-round choice. Lighter riders on smooth roads can use 24-28. Heavier riders, tourers and rough roads benefit from 32-36 spokes for durability.

Brass nipples are stronger and less prone to rounding or corroding. Brass weighs roughly 1g each versus about 0.3g for alloy, so aluminium saves only about 25-30g per wheel (roughly 50g per wheelset) on a 32-spoke build — and alloy can seize or corrode over time. Brass is recommended unless you are chasing the lightest possible build.

A well-built wheel with quality components can last 20,000-50,000 km or more. The key is using a skilled builder who properly stress-relieves the spokes during the build.
