Bike Insurance Calculator — Estimate Your Premium
Estimate bike insurance costs based on bike value, cover level and storage.
How We Calculate This
Premium Estimation
- Base rate: 4% (theft only), 5% (+ third party), 6% (comprehensive) up to 9% (race cover) of total insured value
- Storage discount: Indoor (-15%), Garage (-10%), Outdoor (+15%)
- Value discount: Bikes over £3000 (-5%), over £5000 (-10%) rate reduction
- Annual premium = Total value x Base rate x Storage multiplier x Value multiplier
These are estimates. Actual premiums vary by postcode, security measures and claims history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Specialist cycle cover typically runs about 3.5-6% of the bike value per year for mid to high-value bikes (small/cheap bikes cost a higher percentage because of minimum premiums). A £2000 road bike with comprehensive cover costs roughly £70-150 per year. Race cover and high-value bikes may cost more.
Comprehensive cover typically includes theft, accidental damage, third-party liability, personal injury, race entry fee loss, and often covers your bike worldwide for a limited period.
For bikes worth over £500, yes. Bike theft in the UK is common (300,000+ stolen annually), and repair costs from crashes can easily exceed the annual premium.
Some home insurance policies cover bikes, but often with low single-item limits (£500-1500) and may not cover use away from home. Specialist cycling insurance is usually better for valuable bikes.
Use a quality D-lock, store your bike securely, register it on BikeRegister, install a GPS tracker, and consider a higher excess to reduce the premium.
