Saddle Setback Calculator — Fore-Aft Position

Determine saddle fore-aft position from seat tube angle and saddle height.

How We Calculate This

Setback Calculation

Seatpost line setback = Saddle Height × cos(Seat Tube Angle)

Saddle height is measured along the seat-tube axis from the BB centre to the saddle top (LeMond/Hamley convention). The horizontal component of that line behind the BB is therefore SH × cos(STA), and its height above the BB is SH × sin(STA). A steeper (larger) seat tube angle moves the line forward, reducing setback.

Saddle nose setback = seatpost line setback + seatpost setback − nose-ahead-of-clamp

The seatpost head sits behind the seat-tube line by its setback (0–25 mm), pushing the clamp rearward; the saddle nose then sits forward of that clamp by ~180–200 mm. Subtracting gives the familiar 40–80 mm road figure measured to a vertical through the saddle nose.
