Saddle Height Calculator — Optimal Seat Position
Calculate your optimal saddle height from inseam measurement.
How We Calculate This
Saddle Height Methods
- Hamley (1967): Saddle Height = Inseam x 1.09 (measured from pedal axle to saddle top with crank at 6 o'clock)
- LeMond: Saddle Height = Inseam x 0.883 (measured from BB centre to saddle top along seat tube)
- Heel method: Saddle Height = Inseam x 1.065 (rider should just reach pedal at bottom with heel)
All methods provide a starting point. Fine-tune by 5–10 mm based on comfort and knee angle (25–35° of knee bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke — the Holmes method; aim nearer 25° for racers/time-triallists, nearer 35° for endurance riders or limited hamstring mobility).
Frequently Asked Questions
The Hamley method (inseam × 1.09) is the most common and measures from the pedal axle (crank at 6 o’clock) to the saddle top. The LeMond method (inseam × 0.883) measures from the bottom-bracket centre to the saddle top. The two raw figures are NOT directly comparable — for an 84 cm inseam Hamley gives 916 mm and LeMond gives 742 mm, because they start from different reference points. They only agree once you account for crank length and pedal/cleat stack (typically ~165–175 mm). Pick one reference, set it up, then fine-tune with the Holmes knee-angle check.
Saddle height is measured from the centre of the bottom bracket axle to the top of the saddle, along the seat tube. Some methods measure from the pedal axle at its lowest point.
A saddle that is too high causes rocking hips, knee pain (back of knee), numbness, and reduced power. It is a common cause of injury.
A saddle that is too low causes knee pain (front of knee), reduced power output, and inefficient pedalling. It puts excessive strain on the quadriceps.
