Spoke Count Recommendation
- Base count varies by riding type: Race 24, Road 28, Gravel/MTB 32, Touring 36
- Weight adjustment: heavy riders (over the threshold, default 100 kg) +4 spokes; mid-weight (over 85 kg by default) +2; light riders (under 60 kg) −4 — the whole range shifts together
- Front wheels: 4 fewer spokes than rear (the front carries less load and has no drive torque)
- Priority: Light/Aero −4 spokes, Durable +4 spokes
- Results rounded to multiples of 4 (standard hub drilling)
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. More spokes distribute load better, making the wheel stronger and more durable. Fewer spokes save weight and reduce aerodynamic drag but are less forgiving of impacts and harder to keep true.
The rear wheel carries more weight (~60% of rider+bike), handles drive torque, and braking forces. It also has asymmetric spoke tension due to the cassette. 4 more spokes than the front is typical.
It is possible with high-quality rims and spokes, but 28 or 32 spokes would be more reliable and easier to maintain. Low-spoke-count wheels are best for lighter riders.
36 spokes is the gold standard for touring, bikepacking and heavy riders. 40 spokes is used for tandems and extreme loads. These wheels are virtually bomb-proof but heavier.
Disc brake forces are transmitted through the hub and spokes, so adequate spoke count is important. 28 spokes minimum for disc brake road wheels; 32 for most applications.
