Panniers Weight Distribution Calculator
Calculate pannier load distribution and bike handling impact from gear weight.
How We Calculate This
The calculator distributes your total gear weight across front and rear panniers according to the selected setup and ratio.
Wheel loading is estimated from rider position, bike geometry and pannier placement. Handling and climbing impact are assessed from the total system weight and weight distribution.
Frequently Asked Questions
A 40/60 front/rear split is generally considered ideal for loaded touring. This keeps the steering responsive while maintaining rear-wheel traction. With rear-only panniers, the split skews heavily rearward which can cause twitchy handling.
Most quality rear racks are rated for 25-30 kg, and front racks for 10-15 kg. Total gear weight for multi-day touring is typically 10-20 kg. Lightweight bikepackers aim for under 8 kg total.
For loads under 12 kg, rear-only is fine. Above 12 kg, four-pannier touring gives much better weight distribution and handling. Front-only is rarely ideal except for specific bikepacking setups on bikes with front racks designed for it.
On a gradient the resistive force scales with the TOTAL system mass — rider plus bike, racks and gear — not the rider alone. A 15 kg touring load on a ~90 kg rider-and-bike baseline (75 kg rider + ~15 kg bike and racks) adds roughly 15-17% to climbing effort at a fixed speed. Low gearing helps you spin a comfortable cadence under that load: aim for a lowest gear of about 20-25 gear inches, which is a gear ratio below 1:1.
