Ride Time Estimation
This uses the VAM method — the cycling equivalent of Naismith's rule (Cicerone) — where climbing time is added on top of the time to cover the flat distance.
- Flat time = Distance ÷ Flat speed
- Climb time = Elevation gain ÷ VAM, where VAM (m/h) = 3600 ÷ seconds-per-metre (default 4.8 s/m ≈ 750 m/h)
- Moving time = Flat time + Climb time
- Total time = Moving time + Stop time

Climbing is modelled with VAM (velocità ascensionale media — your average rate of ascent in metres per hour). Extra climbing time = elevation gain ÷ VAM, added to your flat-distance time. This is the cycling version of Naismith's rule described by Cicerone. The default rate of 4.8 seconds per metre corresponds to a VAM of 750 m/h, typical of a recreational-to-club rider. Strong climbers (VAM ~1000-1500 m/h) climb faster, so set a lower seconds-per-metre value in Advanced; loaded tourers (VAM ~400 m/h) should set a higher one.
Yes, include all planned stops — cafe breaks, photo stops, puncture allowances. A typical cafe stop is 15-30 minutes. Stops are added on top of your moving time and lower your overall average speed but not your moving average.
Enter your typical no-stop average on flat terrain. For recreational riders this is roughly 18-25 km/h; most club riders sit at 25-32 km/h. This figure only covers the horizontal distance — the climbing time is added separately via the VAM model.
