How We Calculate This
Gear Range Calculation
Range % = (Highest Ratio ÷ Lowest Ratio) × 100
Where highest ratio = Big ring ÷ Smallest sprocket and lowest ratio = Small ring ÷ Largest sprocket. For example, a 50/34 compact with an 11-28 cassette gives (50÷11) ÷ (34÷28) × 100 = 4.55 ÷ 1.21 × 100 = 374%.

Gear range is the ratio between your highest and lowest gear, expressed as a percentage. Higher range means more versatility. A typical 2x road compact (50/34) runs about 370–430%, while wide-range and gravel setups reach 450–500%+.
Chainring sizes and cassette range both contribute. A 50/34 with 11-28 gives about 374% (50/11 ÷ 34/28). A 50/34 with 11-34 gives about 455% (50/11 ÷ 34/34).
Not always. Wider range cassettes have bigger jumps between gears. For flat riding, a narrower range with closer spacing (e.g. 11-25) gives smoother shifting.
