Equipment Budget Calculator — Plan Your Cycling Spend
Plan your cycling equipment budget across all essential categories.
How We Calculate This
Budget Allocation
The calculator divides your total budget using recommended percentages based on your riding type:
- Road cycling: 60% bike, 5% helmet, 12% clothing, 4% lights, 4% lock, 5% tools, 5% accessories (5% spare)
- Commuting: 50% bike, 5% helmet, 14% clothing, 8% lights, 8% lock, 5% tools, 5% accessories (5% spare)
- Mountain biking: 62% bike, 6% helmet, 10% clothing, 2% lights, 2% lock, 6% tools, 6% accessories (6% spare)
- Gravel / adventure: 60% bike, 5% helmet, 12% clothing, 3% lights, 3% lock, 6% tools, 6% accessories (5% spare)
Each preset leaves a spare/contingency slice for the inevitable extras (mudguards, a track pump, a bottle cage). Open Advanced Options to tune any percentage — if your seven categories add up to more than 100%, the spare is held at £0 and the calculator flags the over-allocation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Typically 55-65% of your total budget should go on the bike. The rest covers essential accessories, clothing and tools you will need from day one.
A helmet, front and rear lights, a lock, a spare tube and tyre levers, and a mini pump. These are non-negotiable for safe cycling in the UK.
Yes. Commuters should allocate more to lights (for dark mornings/evenings), a quality lock (to protect the bike at work) and waterproof clothing for UK weather.
Spend 10-15% of the bike value on a lock. For a £500 bike, a £50-75 D-lock is appropriate. Cheap locks offer minimal protection.
Ride the bike for 6-12 months before upgrading. By then you will know what matters to you (comfort, speed, durability) and can make informed choices.
